The City of Tonawanda did a great disservice to the local businesses for the debacle that was Canal Fest 2025. I'm assuming it was the councils decision to not have rides in their city. By doing so, thousands upon thousands of dollars were lost. Think of it. Grocery stores, mom and pop stores, restaurants, markets, gas stations, hardware stores, laundromats, and countless other businesses all lost that revenue. How's that you say? Let me tell you the ways, The carnival company, who's employees number in the hundreds, would have purchased from all of the business types listed above.
From meals, to hardware and maintenance items, to fuel, clothing, and any other item that would have been purchased by these employees, How about the foot traffic by our locals. No need to buy anything if the people have no reason to walk around the "ghost town" that was on Tonawanda's side.
How about the out of town visitors? I wonder how much they would have spent on the many items that they potentially would have needed or wanted.
As it was last year, the carnival was separated away from the traditional areas that once had rides, food, both local vendors as well as other vendors, many of whom drive far and wide, to sell at the fest. This separation hurt everyone involved. The way it used to be setup, visitors had to walk through every part of the festival on their way to what part of the fest they wanted to get too. This lead to "walk by" sales, People would see something and either buy it right then and there or come back later to buy it on their way out.
The way it was so ridiculously set up last year, people who really did not want to go on the rides, or watch their kids while they rode the rides, had no reason to go over to where the rides were. Likewise, the people that wanted to go to the rides did not have to walk through any other part of the festival. There were numerous ways to get to the rides without even having to see the rest of the festival.
And why did this fiasco happen? Because the City of Tonawanda did not want the rides on "their" side. These few knuckleheads, all by themselves, determined the fate of the once great Canal Fest, possibly forever.
Just remember, without carnival rides, the only thing you have left is a regular small town festival where visitors can browse though dozens of homemade craft whatnots. Oh joy!
What I would hope, is that the carnival company blacklists those knuckle heads and find a new permeant home away from the destroyers of free commerce. Let these knuckle heads enjoy that park, what's it's name, tree huggers paradise? all to themselves and let the money flow freely in North Tonawanda. Let these knuckle heads feast on their own stupidness while thousands of people buy, sell, and enjoy themselves.
Don't get me wrong, the Canal Fest Committee is not without culpability here. They are also sitting too high on their own arrogance but that discussion is for another time. This rant/op-ed is pointed squarely at the knuckle heads in Tonawanda. Read My Lips: You destroyed the once great Canal Fest all by yourselves. You deserve full credit for this boondoggle.
I see the CoT has a new mayor. What about the council. Are there any leftovers that were there when the decision to remove the rides on their side was made?
