For sale is this TIBETAN? BUDDHIST? WOODBLOCK PRINT on Handmade paper. It is a really large piece -

The print itself is 19 inches Wide x 35 inches Tall. The paper is Uncut and AROUND 23 inches wide and 44 inches high. I am not sure what this photo depicts but I think it may be a Lohan?.

Besides religious figures, Tibetan woodblock prints commonly depict a range of other subjects, often with symbolic or narrative significance within the broader Buddhist framework:

Symbolic Imagery: The Eight Auspicious Symbols (Ashtamangala) are very common, representing core Buddhist concepts and offering protection. These include the lotus flower, conch shell, dharma wheel, victory banner, endless knot, parasol, vase of great treasure, and two golden fish.

Narrative Scenes and Historical Events: Prints often illustrate scenes from the lives of important Buddhist figures (like the Buddha or eminent lamas), allegorical journeys (such as the journey across the "bitter sea" to reach Nirvana), or significant historical events related to monastic lineages and teachings.

Portraits and Lineage Trees: Beyond divine figures, Tibetan woodblock prints also feature portraits of revered lamas, abbots, and the visual representation of their rebirth lineages (e.g., Panchen Lama rebirth lineage series from Nartang).

Animals and Mythical Creatures: Animals and mythical beings appear frequently, often associated with specific deities (like Manjushri riding a lion) but also as independent subjects or symbolic elements within broader compositions. Examples include the Sharabha, Viyala, and various forms of Yakshas.

Medical and Scientific Illustrations: Although less common than religious themes, specialized woodblock prints were used for illustrating medical texts, such as the famous medical paintings commissioned by Desi Sanggye Gyatso, which depict human anatomy, medicinal plants, and various medical procedures.

It shows a man in a lavish robe sitting in a nice chair under a tree. He is cooking while surrounded by animals (all kinds of neat creatures!! LOOK) There is some neat bird in the sky with a snake in its mouth and I think thats a dragon in the other corner.

I do not know the exact age of this piece or where it was made. It appears to be homemade paper but I am unsure of the type (rice paper??). Its a thinner paper. It has been stored rolled up and will be shipped to you in a poster tube. It has a crease and fold (see photos).

A lovely large work of art. Look at all photos for overall condition, in the photographs, This is a handmade wood block print and thus may not be perfect. So look at all photos carefully. Photos are part of the description.
