Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentors Needed (Erie County, NY)

Thank you for your interest in Big Brothers Big Sisters! We offer two volunteer opportunities. You select the program that fits your lifestyle, time and interests best.

Our Community-Based Program allows you to share activities with a child on your own schedule: afternoons, evenings or weekends. Bigs and Littles in this program get together about 2-3 times per month to play board games, make dinner, go walking or hiking, watch movies, attend a local ball game or simply hang out.

In our Site-Based Mentoring Program volunteers meet with their Little at a local school or community center for a few hours, after school, one day a week. This is a chance to build and share a friendship in a structured setting. Matches spend time on homework, make crafts, play games, share hobbies or simply talk about their day.

We are excited to get you on your way to becoming a mentor. To discuss our volunteer opportunities or to schedule a volunteer interview, you can contact our Community Relations Department at 716/873-5833 ext 26. If someone is not available, please leave a message with your name, phone number and the best time to reach you. We will return your call as promptly as possible.

Thank you again for your interest. We look forward to hearing from you!

I just moved and I want to donate some furniture items to the Oxford House on Normal Avenue. They desperately need the donations, but neither I nor they have the ability to transport the items. If anyone is able to help, we would be incredibly grateful. I would cover gas costs, as well.
To be moved:
Two beds (1 queen, 1 full with mattresses and box springs)
Two armchairs
Large microwave
Miscellaneous kitchen items
Vacuum cleaner
End tables
Lamps

Depending on the size of the truck, this seems like 1-2 trips.
If anyone is willing and able to help us out, please contact me.
Thank you!

Imagine a chance to promote real, sustainable change for Buffalo's women! A chance to strengthen a woman in a time of transition through wonderful activities like baby shopping, cooking, thrift store hunting, and going to the park!
Each week, women from all over the greater Buffalo area come together with a pregnant refugee woman, to mentor them and guide them through their transitions. Mentors come from all walks of life. Some are in the work force, some are retired, some have only just graduated college.
The only requirements to be mentor are a patient, caring heart and time to meet once a week for 2-3 hours. If you are interested in investing in the lives of these vulnerable women, please get in touch with us at The Priscilla Project. For more information, send me us an email!

Join us July 4 2008 at noon at the front entrance of the buffalo zoo, to help educate the public about the shortcomings of our zoo and many others around the country. The Buffalo Zoo has been sited several times for mysterious deaths, neglect and abuse. Animals at the zoo show stereotypical behavior(pacing, head bobbing) due to confinement, stress and boredom. The buffalo zoo is basically a "collection" of animals, rather that a haven for them. They need more space and better care.
If you can take an hour out of your day to help speak out for those animals who do not have their freedom, please come this friday!

call for welders artists sculptors public arts--need bike racks! (298 Northampton BFLO)

This is an open invitation to create some public art in the form of bicycle racks! There are many fun ideas in cities all over the country (and others) for public bike racks--but in Buffalo? notsomuch--let's change that!
Can you help Buffalo Blue Bicycle with their desperate need for more racks so they can establish more bike hubs around the city?
www.buffalobluebicycle.org

We, Buffalo ReUse want a hub at our store! So we're looking for an artist that will come out and make a site specific bike parking area at 298 Northampton

Get creative! Google some bike racks for inspiration.
Justin says he has a garage FULL of broken bikes that someone(s) could use to make racks--but you can use any other found materials as long as the racks are safe and the public can secure a bike to it.

Buffalo ReUse is a not-for-profit organization committed to developing the practice of a deconstruction, to serve as a vehicle for job creation, building materials reclamation, and community development.

We provide an alternative to the practice of demolition; salvage building materials from construction, renovation, and demolition projects; and provide a source of high quality building materials for sale to the public.

Please contact us if you would like to donate materials you have stashed away in your basement, if you'd like an estimate for deconstruction services, or if you'd like to purchase salvaged building materials

We operate a used building material store and need help making the store a functional and fun place for neighbors and customers to find what they're looking for. The materials are available through salvage, donations and deconstructions of vacant homes we've been contracted to disassemble.
We offer job training to young adults and have developed a plan for neighborhood revitalization. All of the sales generated go toward funding those programs.

You do not have to have any skills; we'll train you.
If you do have carpentry, electrical or plumbing skills or you're Jack/Jackie of all trades; we'd love to meet you!
This wonderful 1800's structure has suffered decades of neglect at the hands of Robert and Nina Freudenheim, leading to this recent catastrophic partial wall collapse which endangered the lives and properties of surrounding neighbors. Robert Freudenheim has been, in the opinion of many citizens, an irresponsible landlord of other historic properties, namely the Lenox Hotel and the Falcon Building. The Lenox was recently lost to a California bank which held millions of dollars in loans against it, and the Falcon Building at 7 Wadsworth Street in Allentown was recently demolished at taxpayer expense after the body of a dead indigent man was found in
the structure.
The Priscilla Project connects at risk pregnant women with volunteer mentors to assist them through their pregnancies. Most of the women we serve are political refugees.

Throught becoming a volunteer mentor, you will get the chance to become a friend to a woman in need. You can support her, teach her what you know about cooking and home care, and do all the things you love about mothering. Like baby shopping and hunting for deals to set up a nursery space!

Pregnancy is an incredible beautiful time, but it is also a time filled with challenges! Will you consider supporting a fellow woman in need?

Mentoring is a commitment to meet with your mentee once a week and offer your support. Any loving woman- whether a mother herself, a full-time worker, or a student- can help!
If you are interested in hearing more, please call me, Nicole at 515-707-6707 or email me at hitchcock.nicole@gmail.com. Thank you so much!
