11GB External USB Hard Drive - $15 (Elwmood Village)
This is a working-pulled laptop hard drive (Hitachi) from a Compaq Armada M700, enrobed in an IOGear USB drive enclosure (this is where I got it: http://www.pacificgeek.com/product.asp?id=79508&C=236&S=968). Actual formatted capacity is 11.2GB with FAT32.
While the enclosure has a place to connect a 5VDC power supply from a brick, sharp readers will quickly note that 5VDC is what a USB port supplies across the connection. And laptop hard drives don't draw more current than a USB port can supply (not so 3.5"-inch drives with their bigger motors and faster RPM's), so the power port is a superfluity. (It DID however, make me wonder what the hell it was there for in the first place. I have since dismissed my curiosity as analism.)
Anyway, what it all adds up to is 11gb of portable storage that doesn't require a power brick, just like a USB flash drive. Only more. Only cheaper per gigaybte.
Comes with a USB cable AND a black vinyl pocket with genuine Velcro. The enclosure itself has a huge metal clip on it that would allow you to attach it to your belt to look like a complete ***hole. (I suppose there are situations in which this could be useful, the clip, not the self-debasement, but they must be dire indeed.)
Near Children's Hospital.
